When an area rug is made by hand it takes a certain method to weave it correctly. Pile weaves are the mostly used type of weaving in making area rugs. This is done by tying a series of knots. A small or short yarn piece is tied on two warp strands making a knot on the rug surface. When there are row with knots made, strands of weft are pulled through the completed warp strands set. A comb is then used to beat the knots and strands to secure them.

A rug that is made by a machine will have a large variety and flexibility in its style. Many manufacturers sell the same rugs; you can find them in different sizes, shapes, colors, and even designs if you want something different. With a handmade rug you will not be able to find the same rug. Handmade rugs are a work of art and can not be made exactly the same. You will always find a small difference in them.

Natural dyes that go into handmade rugs insure that they have a longer life span than others. The dyes help the rugs color to stay longer without fading. An area rug is a good investment. These rugs can life longer than a lifetime and then some. They often become heirlooms passed down from family members over time.

The several things that tie these rugs together is the knot, dye, and weave. A weave is a certain technique that is used to hand makes a rug. The weave has three techniques that are used which are the pile and flat weave, and the hand tufted.

A handmade rug will usually have a pile weave method of done to make it. Knots are used to create the pile weave. The knots on the surface of these rugs are made with a short piece of yarn that is tied on two warp strands. Strand of weft are pushed through after the rows of knots are made. To secure the knots the strands and knots are beaten with a comb.

These hand tied knots cover every inch of the rug and have about 30 or up to 1000 knots. Good weaves can tie knots in as little as ten seconds. These rugs are beautiful hand made works of art made with patience and loads of time. A flat weave does not use knots in the weaving of rugs. Passing a weft through the warp strand is the way this is done.

Hand made rugs are made with their own personality. Rugs that use the hand tufted technique is made with out knots also, instead wool is pulled through the backing of the rug. This is how the 'tuft' is made. Latex glue is used to hold these tufts in their place and to apply another foundation. Then a third cloth is applied to the back.

I have only named a very small few of the ways these rugs can be made. Much patience and time has to be put into the making of these area rugs. The cost of these is a little higher than most but they will last longer too. Machine made rugs are equally beautiful and cost less. It is your own personal taste that helps to choose a rug. Factory made and hand made are both equally beautiful.
